I told myself and others that I was so immersed in Teri’s care because no one else could understand Teri’s medical issues and advocate for her. Mom was a nurse, meanwhile, and had my dad, a radiologist, my brother, also a radiologist, and my aunt, a nurse, for support. But the truth was that I wanted to help and be with Teri more, and she wanted me with her, so I was. Whenever I thought about this, I felt equal parts warrior and betrayer. As shown by Google Ngram Viewer , “mom” is more often the accepted spelling in American English. Unlike the previous graph, the use of the term “mum” was at times, more popular than that of “mom”. However, in recent decades, “mom” is a vastly utilized term. Crystal Owen, Harvey's mother, wrote on Facebook: "I feel like I'm in a nightmare I wish I could wake up from but I'm not.

J.K. Rowling is one of the world’s most famous authors, best known for creating Harry Potter. One of the most prevalent themes across the Harry Potter series is how a mother’s love protects us throughout our lives, even when she is no longer around. If you were correct that the language Americans speak and the language other English speakers use were different languages, then they would not be in essence, spelling aside, exactly the same language with the same rules, structure and vocabulary. There is no doubt that Americans have their own colloquialisms, which are sometimes home-grown, but so do all English speakers around the world and for that matter, around Britain. But a few colloquialisms does not another language make. It is not even dialect.

Let’s take a look at some of the fundamental ways pronunciation differs between British and American English. For the word that means mother, your choice will depend upon your intended audience. American audiences almost never use mum in this context. This beautiful Mother’s Day quote has been adapted from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and could be a perfect funeral poem for mum. A Heart So Large — a verse written by Mark Twain What is perhaps interesting is how little English has evolved as you suggest in those other nations which use it as their mother tongue. But that no doubt is because of the vastly and ever-increasing capacity for connection and communication which kept people in touch so that language had neither need or opportunity to wander off on its own merry way. Since these words have the same meanings, it can be difficult to remember when to use mum or mom. Only mum is an adjective, so that is an easy choice. The Canadian accent is very American, and one presumes it did not happen the other way. The major difference, so as not to be in error, Canadians don’t like being taken for Americans just as New Zealanders don’t like being taken for Australians – although the ‘bigger’ country doesn’t care – is the ‘out’ sound, which is clearly Scottish in origin, but which has remained in the Canadian accent. Wait until they say ‘about’ and catch the ‘out’ sound and you generally know if you have a Canadian. Although even this distinction has been diluted in the past 20 years and with the American accent so pervasive through radio and television, may well disappear anyway.

Interestingly, though, these words may have even older origins. The word ‘mama’ appears in some form in dozens of languages, including Mandarin, Hindi and Arabic. This is because simple noises like ‘mama’ and ‘papa’ are among most babies’ first vocalisations. We imagine ‘mama’ means ‘feed me’ most of the time. Between 1350 and 1400, the Middle English word “momme,” which roughly translates as “do not reveal” or “be silent,” shortened to “mum.” This variation predates its usage to refer to one’s mother, and many adopted it across England. This variance between the two English dialects results from British English words retaining their roots in other languages, such as German and French. On the other hand, American English spelling attempts to simplify words based on how we pronounce them ( source). There, “mam” and “mamma” developed into “mom” and “momma.” For more on this, read our article, “ Momma or Mama: Which Spelling is Correct?” Both “mom” and “mum” are considered short forms for other terms. “Mom” is considered to be a noun, shortened from the word “mother” or “mommy”. A “mother” is defined as the female parent or matriarch of the family. Superintendent Owain Llewellyn, from North Wales Police, said the crash appeared to be a "tragic accident" but that the investigation into why the car left the road is ongoing. As you can see from the third and fourth examples, we did not capitalize the term “mom” or “mum” when a pronoun preceded it or when we used it as a common noun. Regional Use of “Mom” or “Mum” Eventually John got kind of grabby and began touching my husband and they had a weird moment but it was cut short and Ryan got out and went inside, leaving John alone in the pool. Tense times

The Americans, partly in a bid to distance themselves from Mother England, and partly to simplify, one would say, dumb down the language, have done a lot of work on changing spelling, but it remains English although not correctly spelled English if one is to study the core language. American spelling may make it easier for the less bright to learn to spell but it rather subtracts from the substance and depth of the words which have been tinkered with. Teri opened her eyes, her thin hair strewn across the pillow, and smiled sleepily. “Well, hi, honey.”These short readings could be used in their entirety or might give you some inspiration if you’re writing a eulogy for a mother’s funeral, or choosing an inscription for a headstone
