Von Braun’s design was based in part on his work on the Aggregate series of rockets, especially the A-10, A-11, and A-12, in Germany during World War II. And if you like space craft like the immense Apollo Saturn V rocket then you should take a good look at this one, even though it is a re-release of a much older kit. At exactly twice the scale of the kit, they were a real boon to confirm the location and orientation of various details. Because of the smaller diameter I needed to remove some of the thickness of the upper SM wall and reduce the diameter of the top plate from the Revell SM.

I was going to fill them in, but thought maybe they were required to allow the legs of the LM fit inside. A backup station, constructed from a Saturn V third stage, was built and is now on display at the National Air and Space Museum. The third stage and Instrument Unit was carried by the Aero Spacelines Pregnant Guppy and Super Guppy, but could also have been carried by barge if warranted.
